J.T. Toombs was born August 28, 1917, in Nobe, NM, to the home of Henry Elbert Toombs and Ruth Belle Kellogg Toombs and passed away on January 10, 2010, at his home in Pep. He was born and died on the land his father homesteaded in 1906 in the Pep Community. He married Lillie Belle Talley on April 10, 1940.
J.T. graduated from Eastern New Mexico Junior College where he majored in Accounting. He completed income tax returns for neighbors for many years. He spent his life as a rancher and farmer as well as working in the neighborhood as a plumber and carpenter. He served on the Roosevelt County Electric board for 18 years and on the Dora School board. He attended Dora Baptist Church, where he served as Church Treasurer, Sunday school Teacher, and on many Committees. J. T. and Lillie Belle were recognized as Outstanding Pioneer Citizens at Heritage Days and honored at the Roosevelt County Fair as Pioneers of the year.
J.T. was preceded in death by his parents, Elbert and Ruth, and 3 grandsons, David, Richard and James.
J.T. is survived by his wife, Lillie Belle of the home; 2 sons, Douglas Toombs and wife, Margie of Pep, Loren Toombs and wife, Rosalie of Philadelphia, PA, and 1 daughter, Brenda Barrett and husband, Les of Pottsboro, TX. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Chris, Jerry, Robin, Lester, Shelly, Virginia, Vellettia, Iwona, Shirley, Raymona, and numerous great grandchildren. Also surviving J.T. is his caretakers, Delisia Cook and Valarie Watson.
