Leonard Richard Johnson - Obituary

Leonard Richard Johnson died June 4, 2008, at his home in Coleman.

He loved the land. Working 16 hours a day plowing or caring for his cattle was his life. He might not be able to tell a person much about his own great grandparents but he knew the family histories of every cow he owned, always astounding new friends or distant relatives with a running monologue about his cattle's genealogy.

Mr. Johnson was born April 30, 1918, in Cross Plains, Texas, to Luther Richard Johnson and Leola Gwin Johnson. Both the Gwin and Johnson families had moved from Alabama to Callahan County in the late 1890s and early 1900s. Both families eventually settled in the Oplin area.

Mr. Johnson spent his younger years in Clyde and Oplin, where he attended school and met Aleene Swor. The couple eloped July 26, 1936, in Potosi, Texas, after slipping away after church in a car borrowed from Mr. Johnson's uncle. Mrs. Johnson preceded him in death on December 21, 2004.

The couple lived in the Oplin area where Mr. Johnson farmed and worked for other ranchers in the area. In 1950, they moved to Novice, where they lived until moving to Coleman in 1964.

He was an excellent horseman, breaking and training his own horses to "cut on a dime." Before his children grew up and left home, he never missed a Coleman rodeo, always riding with them in the parade and grand entry.

Services for Mr. Johnson, long time resident and stock farmer in Coleman and Callahan counties, is Friday at 10 a.m. at Walker Funeral Home in Coleman. Internment will follow in the Oplin Cemetery.

He is survived by two daughters and sons-in law, Pat and Bob Gordon of Fort Worth and Pam and Robert Kincaid of Weatherford; two sons, Richard and Ellen Johnson of Novice and Larry Johnson of Oplin, two sisters, Dorothy Harris of Canyon Lake, Texas and Oma Christle of Minneapolis, Minnesota; seven grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild. He was preceded in death by grandson, Cody Johnson, sister Augusta Connell, and two brothers Earl and Leo.
