S/O James Bird Gilbert, Jr. & Alice (Trosper) Gilbert. Married Jessie May Gaer in 1916. Church of Christ Evangelist.

The following biographical information has been supplied by Evang. Tom Childers, (23 Sep 2012):

1) Gospel preacher listed in Preachers of Today, Vol 1, 1952, 133.

2) From the Christian Worker, July 1975. 6:

Another good soldier of the cross has gone home to rest. Brother Vernie M. Gilbert died May 22nd after a lingering illness. He began preaching the gospel at the age of seventeen while living in Hale, Mo. His last years were spent while living in Des Moines, Iowa. Most of his life was spent as a traveling evangelist. He was widely known among the churches in the middle states, and was loved and respected by all who knew him. He preceeded me as a preacher a few years for the church in Wenatchee, Wash., and was chiefly responsible for my moving there in 1931. He was a frequent contributer to the Christian Worker, and an article was published in the Firm Foundation after his decease. He wrote a splendid concise commentary on the book of (R)revelation using ancient and medieval history to show the fulfillment of the symbols. He was a good friend of mine and our paths crossed frequently. He left his good wife and two children and was in his 80's when died. -- J. C. Bunn.
