John was a prosperous farmer and sometime blacksmith who inherited most of his father's holdings in North Castle. He was active in the Methodist church and was one of the first trustees of the North Castle Church (Armonk) 1791; later an attendant at Middle Patent close to his home; held town offices and was supervisor of North Castle 1811-20.
