Bessie G. Ellison, 99, St. Joseph, died Sunday, Aug. 4, 2002, at a St. Joseph health care center.
Mrs. Ellison had been an educator for nearly 50 years. She began her teaching career at the Oak Forest School near Springfield. She then taught at the former Pleasant Ridge and Carnegie Schools.
She served as principal for the Oak Grove School and principal for Rock Creek Elementary Schools in Independence. She served as superintendent for the former Platte Valley Elementary School for 13 years.
After her retirement in 1967, the Platte Valley Elementary School was renamed in her honor.
Born Sept. 1, 1902, in Ava, she had resided in the St. Joseph area for most of her life. She attended Southwest Baptist College, Bolivar, and the former Missouri Wesleyan College, Cameron.
She earned her Bachelor of Science degree from Northwest Missouri State University and her Master of Arts degree from the former University of Kansas City.
She was a member of the Missouri State Teacher's Association; National Education Association; Northwest Rural Teacher's Association, of which she was past president; Delta Kappa Gamma International Honorary Society for Women's Education; she served on a statewide committee on 'Building the Missouri Elementary Curriculum Guide'; was one of 30 persons elected nationwide to participate in an elementary workshop at the University of Colorado; and is listed in the Who's Who in American Education.
Mrs. Ellison was a member of Wyatt Park Baptist Church; YMCA; Chapter HV of PEO Sisterhood and Radiant Chapter No. 88, Order of Eastern Star.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Vasal O. Ellison on Jan. 7, 1977; and her parents, John W. and Ada Twitty Arnold.
Survivors include her brother, W.A. Arnold of Plattsburg; and nieces and nephews.
Funeral Services will be held Thursday at 10 am at Meierhoffer Family Funeral Service, St. Joseph. Interment: Memorial Park Cemetery. The family suggests memorial gifts to Wyatt Park Baptist Church or the St. Joseph School District for use at the Library of Bessie Ellison Elementary School.
