Lewis G. Tumlin was the son of William Henry and Raney Bruce Tumlin. He was married to Sarah Ann Elizabeth Davis 11 February 1852 and they had 10 children.

According to the Roster of Confederate Soldiers of Georgia 1861-1865 Lewis was a Private enlisted in CSA on 15 May 1862 in Company I, Georgia 38th Infantry Regiment. He was wounded at Manassas, VA on 30 Aug 1862 and subsequently discharged 28 Oct 1862.
