Passing of a Pioneer

Mr. F. A. Scheske died at 10 o'clock a.m. Tuesday, March 16, 1909, at the residence of his son, Mr. A. E. Scheske.

He was born on January 1, 1820, near the city of Berlin, Germany and crossed the ocean with his family, landing at Indianola, thence coming directly to Gonzales, which has been his home until the time of his death.

His wife died December 25, 1889. Nine children were born to him and his wife, three of whom died in infancy. Four daughters were married from their home, all of who have departed this life. The oldest living son is Mr. A. E. Scheske of Gonzales. The youngest son is Mr. Julius Scheske of Terrell, Texas.

The subject of this sketch was enlisted into the Confederate army at the outbreak of the Civil War, and served two years in hauling freight between Mexico and the City of San Antonio after which he was discharged, but later was again enlisted and served eight months in the navy, being on a gunboat stationed at Port Lavaca. He and his comrades experienced great privations and hardships for lack of food and extreme weather conditions and were under the fire of the federal gunboats at one time during an engagement.

He was a farmer and was a very upright man, highly esteemed by his neighbors and all who knew him, for his noble qualities.

Services will be held at the family residence at 10 a.m. March 17, after which the procession will proceeded to the City cemetery, where the remains will be interred by the side of his wife.

Honorary pallbearers: H. Dietze, L. Burchard, E. Mohrmann, Jon. Fauth, Dr. R. N. C. Tate, E. R. Nagel, Jas. Miller, R. C. Botts, A. R. Harwood.
