Lula had rheumatic fever as a child. It left her mildly retarded. After her parents died, she lived with her sister Emily Byrd Westmoreland's family. She shows up in the 1930 census living with them.
In June, 1950, Lula had to go to Central State Hospital in Nashville on Murfreesboro Pike and Donelson pike, due to dementia. She stayed at Central State Hospital until she died.
According to the family, she was a very sweet person and helped a lot with the children and the farm. At some point in time, she had a baby. The baby is buried next to her in Byrd Cemetery.
