Note:
"The history of Chenango County New York by James H. Smith, Syracuse, NY 1880 page 197 lists Samuel Wheeler as settling in Brisben in 1794.
This history lists him as an Englishman. His father served in the British army during the Revolutionary war under Burgoyne, and on the surrender of that General, remained in the country. Samuel's children were:
William; Samuel; Harry; Ephraim; Sally; Margaret and Jeanette."

Note:
"The book, "From Raft to Railroad-A History of the Town of Greene,
Chenango County, New York, 1792-1867" by Mildred English Cochrane,
page 23, states "In 1794 Samuel Wheeler bought land in the Robert C.
Livingston tract on the east side of the river in Brisben and brought his
wife and five children from Schoharie. His father, John, an officer in the
British Army, was sent over here at the beginning of the Revolution,
accompanied by his three oldest sons. Samuel, the youngest, was
nineteen. As soon as he was 21, he deserted the British, and so great
was his father's wrath that he withheld all of Samuel's wages. When the
war was over, Samuel refused to return to England with his father and
brothers, so was completely disinherited. When he saw them off on their
return voyage his father would not even say goodbye to him. Not one of
the many letters Samuel wrote home was ever answered. After being in
this country two years he married Elizabeth Daniels, a companion of
Cornelia Livingston. The Livingstons were old acquaintances of the
Wheelers in England and the reason Samuel frequented their home,
purchased land in this section of Cornelia's brother Robert, and worked
as a surveyor for their father Walter Livingston, a large landowner here,
on the Oxford-Brisben-Greene sections. Samuel Wheeler, Daniel Tremain,
Joseph Tillotson and one or two others came down the Chenango in a
canoe to select their land, and they blazed trees along the bank where
the ox teams were to travel later with their goods. Four more children
were born to the Wheelers here before their deaths in 1804. Ephraim,
the youngest, was only four, and Joseph Tillotson's sister Esther, kept
house for the children for a while, as William D., the oldest was but
Twenty. Joseph Gray succeeded the Wheelers on the farm, followed by
generations of Bartoo and Burgess families (now John Nintzel)."
