He was born on 30th October 1870 and baptised at St Botolph's church, Northfleet on 13th November 1870.
He grew up at 4 Huggens Cottages, Northfleet. He was raised by his maternal grandmother, Lucy Davis, and cosequently had the nick name "Teddie Davis". He was admitted to the Sturge School, Northfleet High street, on 3rd April 1876 and was mistakenly enroled under his grandmother's surname.
He married Sarah Ellis in 1890. They had seven children, Sarah, 1890, Edward, 1892, Emma, 1895, Evlyn 1897, Frederick, 1905, Elizabeth 1907 and Thomas, 1910.
He was a cement labourer, working for fifty-two years at Bevan's Cement Works and after his marriage lived at 14 Garden Row, Gravesend.
He took to his bed two days after Sarah's death and died there three weeks later, "stricken down by his great berevement" according to a report of his death in the Gravesend Reporter.
He died aged sixty-six on February 2nd 1937, and was buried in Northfleet Cemetery, grave K161, on 9th February 1937. The National Union of General and Municipal Workers sent a representative to his funeral.
