RICHARD ALLEN MONTPLAISIR
Jan. 11, 1940 - Dec. 30, 2009

Richard "Dick" Allen Montplaisir died with peace at home Wednesday, Dec. 30, 2009, in the loving embrace of his wife of 47 years, Carolyn, and family in Portland. He was 69. Dick, the fourth of 12 siblings, was born in Fargo, N.D., Jan. 11, 1940, to Henry and Jeanette Montplaisir. Dick grew up on the family farm in Horace, N.D., and was taught to work hard, respect others and to live with a generous spirit towards all. Dick could always be counted on for help, or his ability to know how to do or fix anything!

Dick served in the U.S. Army, stationed in Washington, D.C., for the honor guard. His duties included guarding First Lady Kennedy. After his service, Dick returned to Fargo where he met and married the love of his life and best friend, CAROLYN FAGERBERG, on May 5, 1962.

After the birth of their daughters, Rhande and Lisa, the family moved to Portland, where Dick enjoyed all the Northwest has to offer. He began a career in heavy equipment manufacturing retiring in 2002 from Allied Systems. Dick then went on to work for his brother Ronald with maintenance and mentoring many of his coworkers on the "how to" of caring for apartments and trying to help the tenants, a job that he truly enjoyed.

Dick's greatest sorrow came when his 3-year-old son, Kirk, tragically died in a traffic accident in the early '70s. Within weeks, neighbors began organizing an effort to establish a park in Kirk's memory nearby so children would have a safe place to play, which was a tremendous honor to Dick and his family.

Dick's greatest pastimes were gardening, fishing, being around family, especially his grandchildren, and keeping busy helping others. He was a man of very few words, but when he spoke his words were worth listening to.

Dick is survived by his wife, Carolyn; daughters, Rhande (Doug) Ainslie and Lisa (Mike) Amen; grandchildren, Danielle and Alex Amen and Cameron, Bryce, Mitchyl and Gaige Ainslie; in-laws, Earl and Lorraine Fagerberg; siblings, David, Elly Larson, Ed (Mary), Ron (Linnea), Karen (Rick) Chase, Bruce (Marybeth), Kathy (Larry) Harrington, Rosie (Tom) Seaburg, Mike (Wendy) and Linda See; sister-in-law, Joan; and many nieces and nephews. Dick was predeceased by his son, Kirk; brother, Jerry (Joan); and his parents.

A funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 5, 2010, in Gresham Memorial Chapel, 257 S.E. Roberts Ave., Gresham, OR 97080. A private graveside service will be in Willamette National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to Candlelighters for Children with Cancer, P.O. Box 2277, Portland OR 97208; or simply by doing a good deed in Dick's honor.
