James was employed as a mine engineer in Juneau, Alaska in 1901. In 1905, he sustained a serious head injury in an explosion causing brain damage which altered his personality and behavior. Later, the Territorial Court of Alaska adjudged him to be "Really and Truly Insane" by a jury of six men. He was then sent by boat and train to Morningside Hospital in Portland until his passing 22 years later. His family erected a granite monument in his memory.
