Melvin was the son of Thobart and Lora Doucet Higginbotham. He served in the U.S. Navy. He attended Sheridan Terrace Baptist Church. He is buried beside his first wife, Jo Ann Ray Higginbotham. After her death, he married Audrey Mae Munsinger Germany 20 July 1995 in Anderson Co, TX. He died at his home in Palestine, TX. He was survived by his second wife; one daughter, Janet Marie Higginbotham Monaco of Austin; one son, Paul Joseph Higginbotham of Palestine; two sisters, Dessie Brown and Jan Monier of Louisiana; one brother, Clary Higginbotham of Louisiana; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and seven stepchildren. His was published in the Palestine Herald-Press, Wednesday, 23 July 2003.
