Thomas Jr migrated from England with his family when about 9 yrs old. First settled near relatives in New York State and later moved to Bureau County, Illinois.
Thomas Sr and Mary Cummings are listed in the 1860 Census as living on the farmland of Selby Township, Bureau County. The post office address for their farm was Hollowayville.

Thomas Cummings Jr listed as a corporal in May 1861 in the 12th Illinois Infantry , Company I (3 mo.)
Re-enlisted in Dec 1861 in 51st Illinois Infantry, Company D where his was promoted to 1st Sergeant, 2nd Lt., finally 1st Lt.
Wounded at Kenesaw Mountain in June 1864.

Specifically mentioned in after-action report for Battle of Chickamauga (Sep 1863) -
"...During the engagement of this day [Sunday the 20th] Lt. Cummings of Co. D assisted by a squad of men representing several other Regiments captured the battle flag of the 24th Alabama Regiment." Sam B. Raymond, Lt. Col. 51st Ill. Inft., Commdg.
