Samuel Spencer, third child and only son of William Spencer and Agnes Harris, b. circa 1639 likely at Hartford, Conn. He d. in 1716 per the Hartford 1st Church record, but there is no extant probate record. His father dying when he was less than 2 years old, he was raised at Hartford by his stepfather, William Edwards.

In circa 1667, Samuel m. Sarah Meakins, dau. of Thomas Meakins, Jr. and his 1st wife Sarah, b. Apr. 24, 1641 at Braintree, Mass. On Apr. 24, 1698 both Samuel and wife Sarah were admitted to full communion of the Hartford 1st Church. Sarah d. Apr. 24, 1706 per the Hartford 1st Church record. They had the following eight children, all b. at Hartford, Conn.:

• i. Samuel Spencer, Jr., b. after Mar. 29, 1668, d. testate Mar. 29, 1748 at Bolton, Conn.; m. Sept. 16, 1696, Hepzibah Church, dau. of Dea. Edward Church and Mary Hopkins, b. Dec. 8, 1678 at Hatfield, Mass. She d. Sept. 17, 1745 at Bolton. They resided at Hartford, Colchester, and finally at Bolton. Nine children of the family.

• ii. Sarah Spencer, b. circa 1671, was living in 1755 at Wethersfield, Conn.; m. 1) circa 1694, Joseph Easton, 3rd, s. of Dea. Joseph Easton and Hannah Ensign. Seven children of the family.

• iii. Hannah Spencer, b. in July 1674, d. Dec. 5, 1702 at Hartford; m. May 13, 1696 at Hartford as his 1st wife, Caleb Stanley, Jr., s. of Capt. Caleb Stanley and his 1st wife Hannah Cowles, b. Sept. 6, 1674 at Hartford. He d. Jan. 4, 1711/2 at Harford. There are no known children of the marriage.

• iv. Elizabeth Spencer, b. circa 1676, d. bef. Aug. 1748; m. circa 1705, Lieut. Nathaniel Marsh, s. of Sgt. John Marsh and Sarah Lyman, bp. at Hartford Mar. 5, 1670/1 (2nd Chh.). He d. intestate at Hartford bef. Aug. 1748. Five children of the family.

• v. Rachel Spencer, b. circa 1678, d. aft. Dec. 1, 1747; m. Oct. 8, 1705 at Hartford, Joseph Cook (q.v. Cooke), eldest child of Noah Cook (q.v.) and Sarah Nash of Northampton, Mass., bapt. Feb. 15, 1679/80 at Hartford (1st Chh.). He d. testate bef. Dec. 1, 1747 at Hartford. They had no known children.

• vi. Mary Spencer, b. circa 1681, d. Feb. 16, 1756 at Hartford; m. May 24, 1705 at Hartford as his 2nd wife, Capt. Cyprian Nichols, Jr., only s. of the early Hartford settler Capt. Cyprian Nichols and his wife Mary, b. circa 1672 at Hartford. He d. Jan. 2, 1756 at Hartford. Nine children of the family. Capt. Cyprian had m. 1) circa 1697 at Hartford, Helena Talcott, dau. of Lieut. Col. John Talcott and Helena Wakeman, b. June 17, 1674 at Hartford. Helena d. May 12, 1702 at Hartford following the birth of her third child.

• vii. Abigail Spencer, b. circa 1684, d. bef. 1760; m. Mar. 3, 1708/9 at Hartford, Joseph Symons. Nine children of the family.

• viii. Agnes Spencer, bp. Nov. 20, 1687 (Hart. 1st Chh.), d. Apr. 11, 1773 at Hartford; m. 1) Mar. 14, 1708/9 at Hartford, Nathaniel Humphrey, s. of Sgt. John Humphrey and Hannah Griffin, b. Mar. 3, 1679/80 at Simsbury, Conn. He d. intestate in Dec. 1711 at Hartford. Two children of the family. Agnes m. 2) Oct. 15, 1715 at Hartford, Lieut. John Hubbard, s. of Samuel Hubbard and Sarah Kirby, b. in Aug 1691 at Hartford. He d. Feb. 14, 1744/5 at Wintonbury Parish, now Bloomfield, Conn. Six children of the marriage.

Prior to Samuel's death, in March 1703/4 he, along with nephew John Case, were appointed co-administrators of the estate of Samuel's brother-in-law John Case of Simsbury. Some two years after Samuel's own death at Hartford, in which he left no extant probate record, by a deed initially dated Feb. 20, 1717/18:

• Know Yee that wee Samuel Spencer of Colchester and Joseph Easton and Sarah his wife & Nathaniel Marsh and Elizabeth his wife, Joseph Cook and Rachell his wife, Cyprian Nickols and Mary his wife, Joseph Symons and Abigail his wife, John Hubbard and Agnes his wife, all of Hartford, do grant, convey, alienate...to John Austin, his heirs, administrators and assigns...a parcel of land in the Town of Hartford... [Hartford Deeds, 3:160.]

The land was obviously the former property of their parents.

No record of burial exists for Samuel, but as his death is recorded in the Hartford First Church records, it is assumed he was interred in the Hartford First Church cemetery, now known as Hartford's Ancient Cemetery, the only cemetery existing in Hartford in 1716 when he died.
