Mr. John V. Atkinson, one of the best known citizens and most successful planters in the Federal Point section, died Monday at his home there, after an illness of a few days, first with influenza and then pneumonia.
The deceased was a native of South Carolina, but had resided for many years at Federal Point, where he had engaged in the potato business with such success as to gain him a small fortune. He was a member of the board of school trustees, town alderman, and was one of the most progressive and influential residents of the eastside, and his death is deplored by many friends throughout the county.

Federal Point, Feb. 16 - This community was shocked and deeply saddened today by the death of Mr. John V. Atkinson, that occurred about 1 p.m., as the result of an attack of influenza that developed into pneumonia. What adds to the distressing condition is the fact that his entire family, wife and four daughters, are suffering from the same horrible disease, two of the daughters critically ill with pneumonia. John V. Atkinson, with his brother, Walter Atkinson, came to this place many years ago when they were poor young men, from Chester, South Carolina and engaged in farming. By their skillful industry and upright dealings they have acquired a modest competency and comfortable homes. John V. Atkinson always took a lively interest in our municipal affairs. He was our town Treasurer for a number of years and president of our Social Literacy Club, and also president of the board of school trustees of this district. By his ability and kindly manner he made all who knew him his friends. He was ever ready to lend a helping hand to any one in trouble, and few men are as deeply missed as he will be in this community, and out deepest sympathy is extended to his afflicted wife and family.
