William Townsley Allen is written up in "A Rockaway in Talbot, Vol. IV" (Davidson) beginning on page 47. It mentions that he was born in South Carolina, came to the Rough Edge area of Talbot Co., GA with his family about 1842. "About 1873, he moved to Talbotton and bought the old Claiborne Hotel on the courthouse square. It was his home when he died June 1, 1913. The Talbotton New Era called him one of the town's oldest citizens, and a man whom people knew affectionately as "Uncle Billy," and regarded as a "remarkably active old man." For years he was town Marshall, and his night duties included the lighting of the oil burning street lamps on the square.
Josephine Chapman, of Talbot Co., was married dot Allen on May 21, 1861. She died April 4, 1923. Their children were Mary Alice, Sarah Frances, Stephen Leonard, James Henry, William D., Henan Lee, ira Robert, Lucy and Josie Allen...Data furnished by Mrs. W. Basil Allen, of Talbotton.
