Dr. Margaret Rouse Akin

A former Iowa City resident, Dr. Margaret Akin, 59, died Friday at a Shreveport, La. hospital following an illness of several weeks.

Requiem mass will be at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at St. John Berchmans Church in Shreveport, with burial at Forest Park in Shreveport.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Cancer Treatment Fund of Schumpert Memorial Hospital, Shreveport, or the Dr. Margaret Rouse Akin Memorial Fund of the University of Iowa Foundation in Iowa City. Income from the UI fund will be used for an annual award to a graduating senior in the UI College of Medicine showing promise as a medical researcher.

Dr. Akin was born April 18, 1913 in Boone, the daughter of Thomas and Margaret Rouse. She was married to Austin F. Akin at Shreveport on July 22, 1933.

A graduate of Iowa City High School, she received her MD degree at UI in 1936. She was a physician in Iowa, Louisiana from 1938 to 1941, and was the first woman to intern and practice medicine in Shreveport. She had been an instructor at Louisiana State University School of Medicine since 1968.

Dr. Akin was a charter member of the American Academy of Family Physicians and was a member of Alpha Omega Alpha honorary medical fraternity. She is also listed in Who's Who in American Women and the Intercontinental Biographical Association.

Surviving are her husband; a son, Dr. John R. Akin of San Francisco, Calif.; a daughter, Mrs. Charles G. Cloutier Jr. of Shreveport; six grandchildren; a sister, Mary Rouse of Iowa City; and three brothers, Walter of Iowa City; Dr. J. J. Rouse of Reedsburg, Wis., and Martin F. of San Jose, Calif.
