William Leslie Atkins, age 98, of Waxahachie, passed away Wednesday, August 15, 2007 at Baylor Medical Center, Waxahachie. He was born October 19, 1908 in Arkadelphia, Arkansas to Andrew Jackson and Frances Jane (Cole) Atkins. Leslie graduated from Waxahachie High School in 1928 and on October 12, 1929 he married Christine Roebuck in Tucson, Arizona. He worked for Burleson Honey for 25 years and then owned and operated Atkins Apiaries. He was a Deacon and Sunday School Teacher at First Baptist Church in Waxahachie, a member and Past Master of the Waxahachie Masonic Lodge #90, and a member of the Waxahachie Optimist Club where he served as Chaplain. Leslie was a mentor to many.
Survivors include four children, Mildred Ann Atkins Schmidt and husband, Arnold of Hammond, Indiana; Barbara Grace Atkins Vuillemin and husband, Dr. Joseph Vuillemin of Tucson, Arizona; Frances Jane Atkins Weiss and husband, Dr. Kurt Guido Weiss of Fischer, Texas; William Leslie "Sonny" Atkins, Jr. and wife, Connie of Waxahachie; fifteen grandchildren, Jane Ann Vuillemin Bruno, Dr. Barbara Ann Weiss Probe, Dr. Carmen E. Weiss Heath, Merial E. Vuillemin Cornell, Susan E. Schmidt Crampton, Joseph Jean Vuillemin, Dr. David K. Weiss, Arthur Leslie Schmidt, Shannon R. Atkins Almon, Dr. Ruth Erica Christine Weiss Miller, Katherine Jane Weiss Winson, Wm. Leslie Atkins, III, Guy Woodson Atkins, John G. Atkins Weiss and Honey L. Atkins Horn; 38 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Leslie was preceded in death by his wife, Christine Atkins in 1993 and ten brothers and sisters.
Interment will be held Monday, August 20, 2007 at the Harts Chapel Cemetery in Curtis, Arkansas.
