Mr. Marple was born Feb. 16, 1915, in Raywick, Ky., to Daniel and Myrtle (Ballard) Marple. He married Gertrude Stein on April 26, 1957, in Princeton.
He graduated from DePue High School in 1933 and was a purchasing agent for New Jersey Zinc Co. and Mobil Chemical until retiring in 1980.
He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in DePue and served several terms on the DePue Library Board.
Survivors are one son, Kent (Richie Anne) Marple of Gulf Breeze, Fla.; five stepchildren, Roberta Chiesi of rural DePue, Barbara (Albert) Fusinatto of Dalzell, Arthur (Sylvia) Downie of Hennepin, Robert (Annie) Downie of Spring Valley and William Downie of Peru; five grandchildren; 13 stepgrandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren and stepgreat-grandchildren; and one sister, Shirley Drost of Spring Valley.
He was preceded in death by his wife on Oct. 31, 2007; one son, Roger Marple; and one brother.
Memorials may be directed to Alzheimer's Association or to the donor's choice.
