Fractured Skull Received in Crash on Midway-McDonald Road Causes Death of Robert Zimmerman, of Waynesburg
Injuries suffered Tuesday night in an automobile accident on the Modway-McDonald road proved fatal yesterday morning to Robert Zimmerman, 43-year-old World War veteran, of 270 1/2 Elm street, Waynesburg.
Zimmerman died in the Canonsburg hospital, where he was removed following the accident, at 7:30 a.m. yesterday. He suffered from a fracture of the skull and a fracture of the left leg.
According to the Washington sub-station of the State Highway Partol, Zimmerman and Charles Phillips, whose address was given as New Sheffield, Beaver County, were proceeding along the highway between Midway and McDonald in the direction of the latter town. The patrol said that Phillips stated Zimmerman was driving the machine which was owned by the Waynesburg man. In making a turn to the left on a wide curve the car struck a guard rail end-post amd knocked four guard rails loose. The impact was so severe that both men were thrown free from the car. Zimmerman was unconscious when found. Phillips, according to reports, had only minor lacerations. The front end of the machine was demolished.
Following Zimmerman's death in the Canonsburg hospital yesterday morning, the body was taken in charge of Deputy Coroner W. H. McNay and an autopsy performed. Later the body was brought to the Weaver Funeral Home in Waynesburg.
It is understood that an inquest will be held.
Mr. Zimmerman was born in Wayne Township, near Blacksville, W. Va., a son of Henry Zimmerman, deceased, and Mrs. Carolyn Headlee Zimmerman. He was never married and is survived by his mother and the following brothers and sisters: Vincent Zimmerman, of Waynesburg, R. D. 3; William Zimmerman, of Spraggs, R. D.; Thomas Zimmerman, of Pine Grove, W. Va.; Charles Zimmerman, of 42 East Elm street, Waynesburg; Mrs. Martha Walters, Mrs. Emma Tennant and Mrs. Ocle Yeager, all of Blacksville, W. Va., and Mrs. Blanche Rogers, of Mt. Morris.
He was a member of the AEF during the World War and served as a private in the 330th Infantry. During his tour of duty he served 12 months in the United States and seven months in France and was wounded in action.
The body will be removed to the home of Charles Zimmerman, of 42 East Elm street, this afternoon, where short funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at 3 o'clock with additional services later in the Methodist Episcopal Church of Balcksville, W. Va. Interment will be in the church cemetery.
