On October 24, 1884 as George Topham, he married Maggie Reese Southerland at Lynchburg, Virginia.

George Topham was born in the District of Columbia, the son of James and Annie M. Topham. His father established the Topham Trunk and Leather Goods business in 1855. The store was located on Seventh Street during the early years of the Civil War and then moved to 1231-1233 Pennsylvania Avenue until 1903. The next location was at 1219 F Street until 1920. After the death of his father in 1912 he and his brothers and sisters continued the business. He retired in 1920 after 40 years with the business. The store was later sold with its extensive manufacturing business and factory property. He attended the public and private school in the District and the Western Maryland College at Westminster, Maryland. He was well known in music circles as an instrumentalist and vocalist. He was a pupil of Dr. J.W. Bischoff. On October 29, 1884 he married Margaret R. Sutherland, daughter of Rev. S.B. Sutherland of the Methodist Protestant Church of Lynchburg, Virginia. He was a member of Federal Lodge No. 1, F.A.A.M. He was also a member of Fidelity Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star. He died at age 68 on Thursday, March 20, 1930 at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Arthur Whittet at 3271 Van Hasen Street after an illness of several months. The cause of death was heart disease. Survivors included his widow; three daughters: Mrs. Jesse Gover of Passaic, New Jersey; Mrs. Arthur B. Whittet of the District and Mrs. N.A. Epperson of Meridian, Mississippi; two brothers: Washington Topham and Howard W. Topham, both of the District and two sisters: Mrs. Lida T. Oldfield of the District and Mrs. Robert Bernheim of Charleston, West Virginia. Funeral services were held at the residence of Mrs. Whittet with Rev. Dr. Charles E. Fultz officiating. Interment was at Oak Hill Cemetery with Masonic rites at the grave by Federal Lodge No. 1, F.A.A.M.
