President Rutherford B. Hayes. He lived in Crockett afer moving his family from AL to Crockett following the Civil War.

He was engaged in education, and for quite a number of years was President of Chappel Hill Female College in Washington County. Thence he moved to Houston County where he was similarly engaged. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church and a mason. His remains were laid to rest under the auspices of the Masonic Order.
