About 1856, Ephraim King moved to Winona, Minnesota, where he was elected sheriff and then elected to both houses of legislature. He returned to Pennsylvania and studied medicine under the supervision of his brother-in-law, Samuel Chalfant. He graduated from the Medical Department of Western Reserve College. Ephriam practiced in Monongahela City before moving to Astabula, Ohio and practiced medicine there. He served as Mayor twice and served on the board of education.
