Bessie M. Knapp, 99, of La Grande died June 5 at an Elgin care center. Loveland Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements. Private burial will be held at a later date.

Mrs. Knapp was born May 24, 1904, to Burton and Elma DeLorge Batchelor in Cove. She attended Riveria School, and in 1919 she married Lowell W. Knapp. He died in 1973. She was a member of the 12 Aces Club and AARP. She enjoyed children, and was known as "Nanny" by many families in La Grande. She enjoyed gardening, writing letters, traveling, crochet and being with family. She won a blue ribbon at the Union County Fair for a silk quilt.

Survivors include children and their spouses, Loyde and Betty Knapp of Elgin, Elmer "Pat" and Alice Knapp of Paradise, Calif., and Marion Knapp of La Grande; 14 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren, eight great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Thelma Barker of La Grande and Gerrie Bromell of Pendleton; a brother, Floyd Batchelor of Camas, Wash., and a daughter-in-law, Wilma Knapp, of South Bend, Wash. Her husband, a son, Charles Knapp, two brothers and three sisters all died earlier.
