Man Killed In Hit-Run Case
Body of Goebel Benningfield Found Sunday Morning In Roadside Ditch
Driver Still Unknown

Local and State police this week were searching for information which would lead to the identity of a hit-and-run driver whose car early Sunday morning struck and killed a 22-year-old Gravel Switch farm worker.

Funeral services for the victim, Goebel Benningfield, son of Mr. and Mrs. Sam Benningfield, were held Tuesday afternoon at the Gravel Switch Methodist Church. Burial was in Haysville Cemetery.

Mr. Benningfield's body was discovered at 5:45 Sunday morning in a ditch beside the Danville Highway approximately half a mile from Lebanon city limits by Roy Willard, a passing motorist whose home also is in Gravel Switch. Coroner John W. Hickey set the time of the accident at between midnight and 1 a.m.. Death was instantaneous, he said. Seen At Midnight

The accident victim was last seen alive about midnight at the Whistling Pig Restaurant on East Main Street. Police said he apparently was enroute home when the accident occurred, and theorized that he probably6 was standing at the roadside in efforts to obtain a ride.

In their search for the driver of the automobile, authorities had but few clues. Fragments of glass and a small piece of metal thought to be from a parking light lends were found in the highway and evidently marked the spot of impact. The distance from this point to where the body was found measured 45 feet.

Survivors, in addition to his parents, include five brothers; James Benningfield of Campbellsville, Earl Benningfield of New market, Emmett Benningfield of Springfield, Robert and Gowdy Benningfield of Gravel Switch; three sisters, Misses Ethel, Margaret and Norma Benningfield of Gravel Switch, and maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Jim Wheeler of Gravel Switch.

Funeral services were conducted by the Rev. Jim Harley and the Rev. Harold Brooks. Serving as pallbearers were Tom, Foster, Joe, Clinton, Wesley and Lee Wheeler.
The body was at the Pruitt-Hickey Funeral Home until Tuesday afternoon.
