Oscar and Martha were never divorced but they were separated at the time of his death. He had returned to Kentucky to engage in the carpentry trade and suffered a major heart attack. His brother, Chester Jennings, went to Kentucky and brought his body home for burial alongside their father in Alabama. Oscar and his family were living in Pensacola, Escambia County, Florida during the census of 1920. Oscar was living with his mother in 1930 with his two sons. However, the 1930 census of New Orleans, Louisiana shows Mrs. Oscar Mattingly (Martha Gideons) with all her children: Martha 41, Herman 17, Albert 15, Rosalie 13, and Alice 11.

He is listed as Oscar Mattingly on his death certificate #19866. His date of birth is shown as 4-14-1889, which disagrees with other facts. He is listed as being married to Lulah Conley Mattingly but that is also incorrect. He never divorced Martha and Lulah was a woman he was living with at the time. His wife and children were in Alabama. His parents are also listed incorrectly as Thomas Mattingly and Rosa Bucker. Obviously Lulah knew nothing about Oscar, or at best, very little. Cause of death was listed as coronary occlusion.

Oscar registered for the World War I draft at Robertsdale, Alabama on 6-5-1917. On his draft card he reported that he was of medium height, slender build, with blue eyes and dark brown hair. He further reported that he was married with three children, was employed by his father, and was born in Grayson Springs, Kentucky on 4-14-1890. Actually, Oscar was 5' 9" tall and of muscular built, according to his children. His wife, Martha, was the same height as Oscar.
