The Rev. Berton C. Altheimer, 80, of Little Rock, formerly of Pine Bluff, died Friday at Hospice Home Care. He was born April 6, 1925, a son of the late Rev. Silas J. Altheimer and Jeanette Altheimer.

He attended schools at Pine Bluff and received a bachelor of science degree from Arkansas AM&N College (now the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff). He served in the armed forces during the Korean War and World War II.

He was awarded an honorary doctor of divinity degree in 2002 from Shorter College in recognition of 50 years in the ministry. He retired from the Veterans Administration Regional Office after 28 years of service. He was a retired presiding elder of the African Methodist Episcopal Church, having served for the Hot Springs, North Little Rock-Fort Smith and Camden-El Dorado districts.

He was also preceded in death by one brother, Rowan Altheimer.

Survivors include his wife of 22 years, Edith L. Altheimer; three daughters, Jeanette Dampier and Fairfax Altheimer, both of St. Louis, and Ellen Bowditch of Woodbridge, Va.; one step-daughter, Karen Irving of Portland, Ore.; three brothers, Joseph P. Altheimer, Sylvannus Altheimer and Rosenwald Altheimer, all of Pine Bluff; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
