John William Bagwell was born 2 Mar 1858 near West Liberty, Union township, Howard county, Indiana to William Archabold Bagwell and Mary Ware.

His mother Mary Ware died about 5 months after giving birth to him, on 23 Aug 1858. She was laid to rest in the Jerome cemetery. John was subsequently given to his mother's parents, John Albertson Ware and Margaret Roberts to be raised while his older brother Lewis (age 4) remained with his father. His other older brother Joseph M. had died about 6 weeks prior to John's birth, on 13 Jan 1858.

In the 1860 census John Bagwell is living with John & Margaret Ware. His father William remarried 20 Feb 1860 to Maria/Mariah Cox and they went on to have 2 children, James Wesley, b. 1861 and Milton Archabold "Archie", b. 1863.

When John was age 7, his grandfather John Ware passed away in West Liberty, Union township (July 1865), and since his grandmother was elderly and not able to care for him, arrangements were made to have John go live with his mother's niece, Mary Jane Ware who had married Thomas C. Jackson and who were also living in Howard county. Here John grew to manhood learning the farming trade.

At age 22, John married Sarah Ellen Carr, on 30 Mar 1880 in Howard county. Sarah was age 20. They had 6 children (see husband's memorial).

Sarah Ellen passed away first on 18 Dec 1934 in Greentown. John passed away on 10 Apr 1938 in Kokomo at the home of his son Garry. John and Sarah were buried together in the Greenlawn cemetery.
