Elizabeth Anne Carmichael Rumph was the daugher of David Rumph, a lawyer, and his wife Elizabeth Carmichael. Born near St. Matthew's South Carolina, she was educated at local schools. On December 11, 1831 she married her first cousin David Flavel Jamison and was the mother of 13 children. She lived in Orangeburg until 1859 when the family moved to Barnwell County. Her husband died in 1864, and the next year, Sherman burned her plantation, Burwood, to the ground. She survied with five of her minor children in a former slave cabin for four years until she was evicted from the land for a debt that she did not owe. She lived from 1869 until her death with her older children, finally dying in Charleston on December 11, 1888, her wedding aniversary. She was an exceptional wife and mother. She was founding member of the Presbyterian Church in Orangeburg and remained an example of Christian virtue all of her life.
