WILLIAM KOEHRING 1903
A message arrived here on Tuesday night shortly before 7 p.m. with the information that Mr. Wm. Koehrig, Sr. had died suddenly while in Elkhart Lake. Mr. Koehring who had had heart problems for a long time, took the afternoon train to Elkhart Lake to see Dr. Brickbauer. As he sat in a chair in the doctor's office and was speaking with him, he suddenly became ill, and as Dr. Brickbauer jumped up to help him, Mr. Koehring took his last breath. A heart attack brought his life to a sudden end.
With Mr. Koehring's death, we have lost a prominent businessman, a long time and well respected resident of Kiel. He took a hand in supporting meaningful undertakings, that were valuable to the development of Kiel, and was president of the Kiel Woodenware Co and had a financial interest in the Kiel Mfg. Co.
Mr. Koehring, Sr. first saw the light of the world on September 26, 1848 in Hummersen, Lippe-Detmold, Germany and came to America in May 1868 and married Caroline Mueller on January 7, 1872 in Sullivan, Jefferson City, Wisconsin. Several years later the family moved to the farm near Kiel. In 1876 he purchased the Ad. Mesch home and later the current Reseburg Hall. Ten years later he built the Grand Central Hotel on the corner of Fremont and 6th Street, which he sold to Ed Brickheimer about a half a year ago due to his ill health. Since then he and his wife along with a maiden daughter have returned to private life.
The marriage was blessed with six children, four daughters and two sons, namely William J., Mrs. Edwin Hollensteiner, Philipp, Louise, Mrs. Hugo Duecker and Martha who all live in Kiel except for Philipp who is employed in Milwaukee.
The burial will take place on Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock following a funeral service at the Reformed Church with Rev. Roeck officiating at the Kiel Cemetery. "Our sympathies to the family."
