Jacob D.Reed born in Reedsville, Wayne Twp, Schuylkill County. Married Emma E.(Woomer)Reed. Served 18 years as an apprentice to William Becker as a Cobbler on Main Street in Schuylkill Haven. In 1892 began operation of a textile mill on Union Street with John Bowen and Moses Lineinger. Reed and Lineinger purchased Bowen's shares and Reed eventually bought out Lineinger and operated the business on his own. In 1896 the business was moved to West William Street where a new mill was built. The business was operated from the William Street facility until the business was closed and the property sold in 1997. Reed was joined in the operation of the business by his sons Ivan W Reed and Willis E Reed.
In 1921 Reed and his sons incorporated the business under Union Knitting Mills later that year Reed died at his home at 54 St Peter St.
Jacob D. Reed was also a Founding Member and President of the Board of Directors of the Schuylkill Haven Trust Company. Reed, a Republican, served 14 years as Schuylkill Haven Borough Assessor. He was a member of St Peter's E.C. Church
