His father John Hale, born 1776, was the son of James Hale who was born in 1737 in England. James Hale came to America with Penn's colony, settled in Baltimore County, Md and died in Mason County, Ky, in the year 1801.

James Hale came to Randolph County, Indiana in about 1831 (possibly earlier) and settled in Ward Township, where he purchased land. He was a farmer his entire life. He married Clarrisa Opdyke in 1826. Her grandparents were from Germany.
