Frank Sluss Jr., 83, of Oak Ridge, departed this life for a better place on Nov. 29, 2009, at his home. He was born Oct. 8, 1926, in Jenkinjones, W.V., the son of Ira Bell Walk and Frank N. Sluss.

Mr. Sluss was of the Protestant faith. He served in the U.S. Army with the Headquarters Battery 1st Field Artillery Battalion during W.W.II. He took his little family to Oak Ridge from the Blowing Springs community after working at K-25 for about a year. He retired from Martin Marietta Energy Systems in 1991 after 38 years of service.

His wonderful and unique sense of humor, his bragging on family and his beautiful singing will be dearly missed by his loving family.

He enjoyed boating, golfing and bowling in his younger years, winning multiple trophies with the K-33 bowling team. He was an avid follower of the Oak Ridge Wildcats and the UT Vols and loved sports of every kind. He was always known for pulling for the "underdog" and always looked for the best in everything. He loved studying the Bible and reading anything about history.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Earl Fredrick Sluss and Kenneth Eugene Sluss.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, JoAnn Beavers Sluss; children, Pat Mosley and husband, Charles "Butch," of Asheville, N.C.; Debby Sluss, Jim Sluss and wife, Becky, Ramona Grubb and husband, Pat, and Frank "Frankie" Sluss III, all of Oak Ridge; and long-time "adopted" daughter, Susann Browning of Heiskell; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; brothers, Elmer Clifford Sluss and wife, Joan, of Woodbridge, Va., and Randolph Sluss and wife, Betty, of Willow Springs, N.C.; sisters, Edith Beavers of New Tripoli, Penn., Janice Mahaffey of Lancaster, Penn., Naomi Murry and husband, Don, and Grace Ann McGee and husband, R. D., "Buddy," of Jonesborough, Tenn.; and by numerous nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.

The family would like to express their appreciation to Debby Sluss for the care, compassion and unending support she gave.

The family received friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 2, 2009, at Weatherford Mortuary. The funeral followed at 8 p.m. with Dr. Steve McDonald officiating.

Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. on Thursday at Oak Ridge Memorial Park. Charles Mosley, Pat Grubb, Mark Turner, Kevin Morton, Kevin Craig and Park White served as pallbearers. Military honors were provided by the Tennessee National Guard.

The family asks that any memorials be in the form of contributions to the National Parkinson's Foundation. An on-line guest book can be signed at www.weatherfordmortuary.com
