James' parents were Tilghman Niblett and Magina Puckett. James married Nancy Elizabeth Briggs Oct. 11, 1859 in Choctaw co. MS. He fought in the Civil War Pension file #12774, approved 19 Sept. 1907. They moved to Texas after the Civil War with his mother and most of his siblings as well as his wife's family.
