David Darling was the great grandson of Dennis Darling, the grandson of Daniel Darling and the son of Samuel and Sarah (Benson) Darling.
David was living with his father in the South Parish of Mendon when the Revolutionary War began. In April, 1775, when the British marched on Lexington and Concord, he was 13 years old. He was not yet sixteen when he enlisted in September of 1777.
His service was six months as a private in Captain Luke Hitchcock's company, Colonel Sprout's Massachusetts regiment. He is not found in Massachusetts Soldiers and Sailors, but he applied for a pension Oct. 2, 1832 in Virgil, NY. He was granted a pension based on his service and his widow recieved a pension as well following his death. In his pension application, he told of serving at Fishkill, New York and at West Point, where he was discharged. He did not claim any other service and none was found for him.
He was married twice. His first wife was Elizabeth Goldthwaite of Smithfield, Rhode Island, daughter of John and Hannah Godthwaite. The date and place of David and Elizabeth's marriage has not been found, but their intention to marry was published in Mendon on February 5, 1784. The birth date of Elizabeth Goldthwaite has not been found. The Darling Collection states that she was the mother of one child and that she died about 1784, but the situation is more complex. There is a record of a divorce between David and Elizabeth Darling in the Providence Co. Divorce Court in March of 1790. The marriage was not a success and either the marriage, the loss of a child or some other occurence caused Elizabeth to become unbalanced.
Elizabeth's father died before Feb. 26, 1800, when probate proceedings were conducted at his house. In those proceedings was the following decision:
'Elizabeth Darling being a daughter and heir to the decs being Delarius Ensane Incapable to take care of her Self & estate__ wherefore it Becomes Necessary in her behalf Some person Should be appointed Voted that Micah Holbrook of Said Smithfield be & he hereby is appointed Guardian to & Over the said Elizabeth Darling & her Estate..
David and Elizabeth (Goldthwaithe) Darling had one child, Ona Darling, b. abt. 1785, died young.
David married as his second wife Mercy Phillips of Glocester, Rhode Island. The intentions of this marriage were published in Mendon, MA. on April 10, 1791 (the record calls her Massa Phillips) and they were married June 4, 1791 in Glocester, Rhode island. She was born Oct. 11, 1771 in Glocester, Rhode Island, the illegitimate daughter of Ruth Cooper. Mercy died July 2, 1853 at White Store, Chenango County, New York, and is buried in the Evergreen Cemetery, Norwich, New York.
David and Mercy moved to that part of Glocester, Rhode Island that became Burrillville after their marriage. They lived there until 1816 when they moved to Norwich, New York, and then to Virgil, New York. David and Mercy had eight children, all born in Burrillville (the area where they lived and where the children were born was officially called Glocester until 1806). David is recorded in Glocester, Providence, Rhode Island in the 1800 census, in Burrillville, RI in 1810; in Chenango Co., NY in 1820; and in Cortland Co., NY in 1830.
Mercy Darling, in a deposition in her pension application dated May 2, 1846, stated that she was the mother of eight children, all of whom were alive except one. They were all born in that part of Rhode Island that became Burrillville in 1806:
1) Joshua, b. Oct. 17, 1791, marr. Rhoda Millard.
2) Darius, b. Oct. 20, 1793, marr. first, Sally Albee and then, Eliza Ann Pierce
3) Ruth, b. Feb. 12, 1796, marr. first, Charles Henry Webb abt. 1817 in Virgil, NY and then, Hiram Coe, abt. 1850 in Virgil, NY
4) Artemas, b. Apr. 7, 1798, marr. Lydia Phillips
5) Mercy, b. Apr. 20, 1800, marr. Dexter Hunt in Guilford, NY in abt 1828, and she d. Aug. 17, 1890. Dexter died Feb. 11, 1799 in RI.
6) Nancy, b. Feb. 25, 1803.
7) David, b. May 20, 1805.
8) Stephen, b. Apr. 25, 1807 in Burrillville.
After David died, Mercy lived with her children. In the 1850 census, she was living with her daughter, Ruth Webb, in Norwich, Chenango Co., NY.
