New York Governor. John Alsop King went to school in England and Paris, then returned to New York and studied law. He was in the cavalry during the War of 1812. He serving as a member of the New York House of Representatives from 1819-1821, then as a member of the New York State Senate from 1823 to 1825. He served in diplomatic positions from 1825 to 1826. In 1832, 1838, and 1840 he was elected to the New York House of Representatives; and from 1849 to 1851 he was a member of the U.S. House of Representatives. He chaired the 1855 convention that organized the state’s Republican Party. He won the Republican gubernatorial nomination and was elected governor in 1856. While he was governor, the New York agricultural society was formed, educational improvements were made, and the Erie canal was enlarged. After leaving the governorship, he served as a member of the 1861 peace conference in Washington, D.C.
