OBITUARY-PRESQUE ISLE COUNTY ADVANCE

JOHN BRUNING DIED TUESDAY-Civil War Veteran and Pioneer Settler of Presque Isle County.

John Bruning, age 89, pioneer settler of this county and one of the two surviving veterans of the Civil War left in the county, died Tuesday at the home of his daughter Mrs John Schalk of Rogers township. Death came after an illness of ten days and was due to the infirmities of old age.

Funeral services (were) held Saturday at the home at one thirty o'clock and from St John Evangelical Lutheran church at two o'clock. Mr Bruning (was) buried in the Rogers City cemetery.

Mr Bruning comes from one of the old and respected families of this county. Born in Germany, he came to this country with his parents at the age of six years. His parents settled in New York state and it was from that state he enlisted in the Northern army and served in the War of the Rebellion.

He came to Presque Isle county in 1871 and lived for a time at Crawford's Quarry. He was a blacksmith by trade and he followed this trade throughout his active lifetime. He took up land in Belknap township some years after living in Crawford's Quarry and later owned his farm in Rogers township but he was more of a workman at his trade than he was a farmer. His declining years have been spent with his daughter, Mrs Schalk.

Surviving him are six children, three daughters, Mrs Minnie Bruning of New York state, Mrs John Schalk and Mrs Fred Spens of Rogers township, three sons, Judge Edward Bruning and John C Bruning of Rogers City and Hugo Bruning of Rogers township.
