Mary Susan Sanders was the seventh of eight known children of Nathaniel B. Sanders (1824-p1870) and Lavinia Catherine (went by Catherine) Boeckel (1821-p1870), who married 16 Apr 1848 at Stokes County, North Carolina. It is not known when or where Nathaniel and Catherine are buried. They moved to Bartholomew County, Indiana soon after marrying, and then somewhat later to Missouri.

Mary married Joseph Martin McCaw (1854-1932) and had at least three children.
