Indianapolis News - Monday, October 26, 1936:

Funeral services were held today in New York for Mrs. Marjorie Potts Marquis, former Indianapolis resident, known widely as an actress and the wife of Don Marquis, noted author. She died at her home there Sunday at the age of forty-four.

Mrs. Marquis was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. F. Potts. Her father, now dead, was an attorney here. The mother, who formerly lived at 235 East Fifteenth Street, has been in New York with Mrs. Marquis for a year.

Mrs. Marquis began her stage career in Indianapolis appearing in several plays presented by the Stuart Walker Company in the Murat Theater. She was interested in summer and Little Theater movements. In the course of her stage career, she played with the Stagers, organized in New York in 1925, with the Washington Square Players, and with the Theater Guild in New York.

She was the Queen in George Bernard Shaw's "The Apple Cart" and Essie in Eugene O'Neill's "Ah, Wilderness." She was director of the Red Barn Theater in Locust Valley, Long Island in 1933.

Her first marriage was to Walter Vonnegut, Indianapolis. They were divorced in 1925, and she became the wife of the author. Two children by her first marriage, Walter Vonnegut and Mrs. Daniel Lynn Carroll, Jr., both of San Diego, California, played with her in the "Ah, Wilderness" production. The husband, children, mother, and a sister, Mrs. Norman Cook, Englewood, New Jersey, survive.
