He commenced his Johnsonburg Fire Department service when he became a member on June 6, 1915. In 1951 he was appointed fire chief, and retired from that position at the age of seventy-eight on July 1, 1976, after SIXTY-ONE YEARS OF VOLUNTEER SERVICE in the fire department and twenty-five years as chief. Mr. Mendat was serving as chairman of the ambulance committee at the time of his retirement as fire chief, was a committee member from eighteen to twenty years, and was made an honorary director. The former fire chief was employed at the paper mill until his retirement in 1965, and then was employed as a 2nd class maintenance man at Bendigo State Park, retiring in 1980. He was a past Johnsonburg Borough councilman. Mr. Mendat was a life member of the Tri-County Firemen's Association, a director of the Johnsonburg Ambulance Association, the Elk County Firemen's Association and the Central Hose company. GEORGE MENDAT DAY WAS HELD IN JOHNSONBURG ON SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 12, 1976, to express gratitude to the former fire chief for his unselfish service for the welfare of the community. He was presented a letter of commendation from the United States House of Representatives, a United States flag that had been flown over our Nation's Capitol, honorary life membership in the Chamber of Commerce, Johnsonburg's Outstanding Citizen Award, Resolution of Appreciation from the Elk County Board of Commissioners and he was designated an Outstanding Citizen of Elk County. When he died his obituary summed up his full life so well by stating: "Of these sixty-one years of admirable and dedicated service (in the Johnsonburg Fire Department), it always seemed he was there when needed. You could always 'go and ask George.' He was very unselfish in the giving of his time. The daughters of the late Mr. and Mrs. George A. Mendat are Juanita (Mrs. Andrew Parana) and Ida (Mrs. Jack Kalhoun).
