He was the only child of Eli 'Harry' and Bridget M McGinnis Bowers.

From his obituary:

DROWNED IN POGUE's RUN - Edward Bowers Ventures into Deep Waters and is Lost.

Edward Bowers, living at 1008 English Avenue, was drowned in Pogue's Run (White River) at the foot of South West Street yesterday afternoon.

He had gone with his parents to spend the day with his uncle, John Maloney, at 1011 Church Street.

There was a game of ball near the house after dinner in which young Bowers participated. The sun was warm and a number of the players went to the waters of Pogue's Run (White River) to cool off.

It was Eddie's 12th birthday and he had received a watch for his birthday. He handed the watch to his mother. She told him not to go swimming (he could not swim). He went anyway.

He was in a venturesome mood and while wading about got beyond his depth. His companions could not get him out.

His screams for help drew a crowd of people but he was drowned before they reached the spot.

His playmates dived for the body, which was in eight feet of water, but they could not, for a time, bring it to the surface.
