Indianapolis Star - Thursday, January 17, 1946:

Mrs. Carrie Howe Cummings, sister of the late Thomas Carr Howe, former president of Butler University, and widow of the late Dr. John Cummings of Indianapolis, died in San Leandro, California, according to word received here last night.

Mrs. Cummings, who was 69 years old, had gone to California in 1943 where she lived with her daughter, Mrs. Frances Ellen Fallgatter. She had formerly resided in Washington, D.C. for 32 years where her husband served as editor of the Federal Board for Vocational Education. He had previously been on the faculty of the University of Chicago. Mrs. Cummings was a graduate of Butler University and was a member of the Woman's College Club and Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority.

Thomas Carr Howe, in whose honor Thomas Carr Howe High School was named, was former executive in the Church Federation of Indianapolis and leader of the Pension Fund for Disciples of Christ. He died in May 1934 after being struck by a car near his home on North Meridian Street.

Mrs. Cummings is survived also by a granddaughter, Miss Ellen Fallgatter, and a brother, Dr. William D. Howe of New York City. Funeral services were held in Oakland, California.
