Paul E. Beam services set; 62 years in law

Services for Paul E. Beam, 89, an Indianapolis attorney specializing in surety law, will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday in Flanner and Buchanan Broad Ripple Mortuary, where friends may call from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. and from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. today.

Beam died Wednesday in Winona Memorial Hospital.

A graduate of the Indiana University School of Law. Beam served in several capacities during his 62 year law career, including superintendent of the fidelity and surety claims department of Ohio Casualty Insurance.

He retired from the insurance company in 1956 to assist the American Bar Association in compiling its first digest of surety laws and cases.

He later was general counsel for the Indiana Bar Association for eight years and served on several of its committees, including the probate section. After being named general counsel emeritus upon his retirement in 1975, he continued to maintain a law practice in his home.

Beam was the state representative to the Washington based Clark Commission, a group responsible for the first code of professional ethics, and was a former director of the I.U. Alumni Association.

In 1974, he received the distinguished alumni award from the I.U. School of Law and, most recently, a 50 year award from the fellows of the Indiana Bar Foundation, where he was a life patron fellow.

A Navy veteran of World War I, he was a life member of the fellows of the American Bar Association and a member of Mystic Tie Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite, York Rite, the American Legion Robinson Ragsdale Post and Central Christian Church.

Survivors include two sons, Paul Jr. and Dr. Robert Beam.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
