Lynn Spence Barker

Lynn Spence Barker age 96 passed away November 22, 2009.

He was born November 10, 1913 in Cache Junction, Utah to John Henry Barker and Harriet May Spence.

He attended grade school in Cache Junction Utah, became an Eagle Scout at age fourteen, and in 1931 graduated from North Cache High School in Richmond Utah. Lynn attended Utah State University and graduated in 1935 with a B.S. degree in Music and Education. He obtained a Masters Degree in Education and Counseling from the University of Idaho in 1965. Later he earned his School Psychologist Certificate from Utah State University.

On June 8,1938 Lynn married Vera Andrus in the Salt Lake City, Utah Temple. He spent 44 years teaching High School in the Idaho school systems. He taught music, American history and American government along with many other classes. The last 15 years of his career he was the guidance counselor at Shelley High School. For many years he was also the senior class advisor. He retired in 1980.

His service in The Church of Jesus of Christ of Latter-day Saints included music director, choir director, teacher, bishop's counselor, high counselor, and stake executive secretary. He served six years as Bishop of the Shelley First Ward, and seventeen years as a special interest teacher .

Lynn fulfilled an eighteen month mission with his wife Vera in the Indiana, Indianapolis Mission. He also served twenty-one years in the Idaho Falls temple.

Preceding him in death were his parents, a brother Dee Barker, his son Spence Andrus Barker (Ruth) of Idaho Falls, ID, a grandson, and a great-granddaughter . He is survived by three daughters - Valeria Saunders (Dell) of Arlington, Virginia, Annette Olsen (Ralph) of Orem, Utah and Dorothy of Salt Lake City, Utah. The family includes twenty-one grandchildren and thirty-seven great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, Nov.28, at the Shelley First Ward Chapel
(184 North Park Ave) in Shelley with Bishop Thane Bolander conducting. Family will visit with friends Friday November 27 from 6:30 till 8:00 p.m. at Nalder Funeral Home (110 West Oak) in Shelley and again Saturday morning 9:30 a.m. to 10:40 a.m. at the church. Interment will be in the Ucon Cemetery.
