He was the son of the late Blume Field and Mary Belle Graham Backus and was born at Mt. Nebo February 4, 1917.
He was the co-owner of the Mt. Nebo General Store for thirty-five years, a member of the Gilgal United Methodist Church and a U.S. Army veteran of WWII.
He was preceded in death by his wife Macel Hughes Backus in 2006.
Surviving: son, Dencil Backus of McDonald, Pa.; 2 daughters, Sharon B. Roop of Summersville and Myra Houser of Clayton, N.C.; 2 sisters, Lana O'Dell of Point Pleasant and Hester Holder of Ravenswood; 7 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, December 23, 2009, at 2 p.m. in the Gilgal United Methodist Church at Mt. Nebo with Pastor Rick Swearengin officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Friends may call at the Waters Funeral Chapel in Summersville from 6 to 8 p.m. this evening.
