Ms. Cheryl Van Steenwyk, age 51, of Singapore, formerly of Orange City, Iowa, passed away on Tuesday, August 26, 2008, on a cruise ship in the northern Pacific Ocean, near Juneau, Alaska.

There will be a memorial service on Saturday, September 27, at 1:00pm, at the Immanuel Christian Reformed Church in Orange City. The Rev. Robert Drenten will officiate. Interment will be on Friday, September 26, at the West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City. Arrangements are with the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.

Cheryl Kae was born on September 28, 1956, in Orange City, the daughter of Ernest John and Anna (Huizenga) Van Steenwyk. She was first raised at Orange City. Later, her family moved to Lakewood, California, where she graduated from the Valley Christian High School. She also attended Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

She then made her home in Singapore, where she was currently the Senior Vice-president and Chief Financial Officer of Transpac Capital.

Cheryl lived life to the fullest and loved being around family and friends. She was passionate about travel, art, movies, reading, shopping, the cultures and foods of the world, and the Oprah Winfrey Show. She was an active volunteer, including art museum docent and tour guide.

Since April of 2003, she was an active member of AmCham and was appointed Chairwomen of their Cultural Affairs Committee in July of 2006. She also belonged to PrimeTime, Singapore's largest professional women's organization, where she had served on their board of directors as Program Chairwomen.

Survivors include a sister, Debbie Heinsma; a brother and his wife, Scott and Cheryl L. Van Steenwyk; three nephews, Kent and Todd Heinsma and Zachary Van Steenwyk; and a niece, Lauren Van Steenwyk, all from California.

She was preceded in death by her parents and four siblings, Darrel, Dennis, and stillborn twins.

Memorials may be directed to the Artesia Christian Home, 11614 183rd Street, Artesia, California 90701, where Cheryl's mother lived for seven years.
