Son of Aaron & Hannah Hayes.
Married Betsy Gist. Children: Elizabeth (Carver); Mary (Carver); Isabel (Russell); Duess (Bratton); Serepta; Atremissa (Welch); Jasper; Newton & Nancy (Harlin).

One of the first settlers in the community, John Hayes along with James Crawford donated 10 acres in which the city of Gamaliel was founded.
