Joseph Jackson Gregg, pioneer newspaper man of the Central Texas area, and owner and publisher of the Santa Anna News for the past 33 years was laid to rest in the Santa Anna Cemetery, on Monday 5 July 1954, and was in the newspaper business for 47 years and having an illness of the last 8 years, moving to Rising Star seeking a place to regain his health.

He was born to John Nelson Gregg and Susan Frances Dingler at Delta County, Ala. on 6 Feb. 1881 being the 11th of a family of sixteen. Joseph attended the Lineville College, Ala. in 1900-01 and a School teacher for 4 years. In 1906, he came to Texas and settled in Comanche, Tx. and was employed on the railroad until 1907, when he first entered the newspaper business a Gustine, Tx. After, Editing and publishing the Gustine newspaper for a few months and working a number of other professions, in 1911 he purchased the Rising Star Record and also served as, editor and published in that City until 1920. During WW I, he served as mayor of Rising Star, He purchased the Santa Anna News in June 1921 and continued until his retirement in Feb. 1946 after suffering the first of several heart attack. He retained the title of editor and publisher of the News.

A number of under privileged children were sent to school through his efforts. He was always doing a good at every opportunity and a great lover of people, ready for a conversation with old friends around the Central Texas area.

Two things, he loved was his work, and association with the Ex Texas Rangers during the late ‘20's and all during the 1930's. Second, was his work with the Nat'l Foundation of Infantile Paralysis in 1933. He was working on getting the campaign started for 1954 in January, when he suffered the heart attack that caused his death.

Joseph J. Gregg married Clara Eunice Buchanan of Pecos, Tx. on 26 Dec. 1910.
He is survived by four daughters: Mrs. Queenie Simmons, Mrs. Eris Jones, Mrs. Frances See, and Mrs. Mary Josephine Schulle, and three sons: Lt Col Joseph J. Gregg Jr., James Richard (Jim Bob) Gregg (deceased, John C. Gregg, Ralph Burton Gregg .

Sixteen Children: Sarah F., Wm. Buford, John Henry, Amelia A. (Cook), Charles Thomas, Mary J. (McDaniel), Emily Aamon, Frances Young, George Nelson, James Monroe, (#11) Joseph (Joe) Jackson, Calvin C., Arnold Waid, Correlius Neal, Raymond Carl, and Susan Rebecca (Harris) Gregg. All members of the family were present with there families, except Mrs. Jack Gregg and (small) daughter.
Pallbearers: O. L. Chaney, Sam Collier, Ford Barnes, H. D. Speck, W. R. Mulroy, and W. H. Tate.
Flower bearers: Mines, H. M Smith, J. W. Watkins, G. R. Smith, J. F. Goen, J. L. Boggus, Carl Autrey, and Miss Lillie Hosch.

Numerous out of town relatives were present (too many to list here). A letter of appreciation was also, noted by the family.
