Ernie II was his oldest son, who accompanied the family to Minnesota. Ernie was 15 in 1864 and became an adult in St. Peter, where he likely met the pretty Caroline Cohrs. Their marriage began at St.Peter, and lasted through Ernie's moves. The first move, however, was to Dovray, Minnesota and where her father, stepmother and siblings farmed.
Ernie III came along 13 years into that marriage and was the second son born to them. It was at Dovray that Ernie III spent his entire growing up years.
In 1901, Ernie II's parents brought him and his siblings west to Spokane, Washington. They located an old homestead owned by George McIntosh, between Rockford and Mica Peak. They purchased and farmed it the next several years, except the times when Ernie II tried being a store proprietor and another time when he bought land near Boise. Ever after, Ernie II stayed to Rockford....he had found 'home'.
In these years, some of Ernie II's kids decided to go to North Dakota. Ernie III appears to be part of that.
But on May 6, 1906, Ernie III was getting 'hitched' in Spokane, Washington, to Miss Ida Jahns, formerly of Wright City, Iowa.
By the 1910's they had moved to Baldwin, North Dakota
Children born to them:
Ralph Henry 1907-1999; m. Meta Hilken 1929
Gertrude 1909-1909
Anton E. 1913-1997 (obit shows no wife; no kids)
Lee S.
Richard J.
Norman Benjamin 1919-2009; m. Mildred Schlender, 7 kids
Eventually, Ernie III found his way 'home' to Rockford and was laid to rest there, at Fairview Cemetery, mid September of 1949.
